Artist Interviews

Jose

Q: How, when and where did you start tattooing?

A: When I was about 16 or 17, I experimented with building tattoo machines.  I was curious and interested in the whole tattooing experience. At that point I started tattooing some friends here and there. I would tattoo on and off. As I got older, I became more interested. A good friend of mine suggested I buy some professional equipment, so I did. I started tattooing friends and family. Word got around and people seen my work, and I got busier. I eventually met another tattoo artist and started tattooing more frequently. I moved on to work in a shop, and as I got better and busier, I decided to move on and open my own shop.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

A:Myself. I look in the mirror and I’m star struck. [LOL] I’m just playing. What inspires me is a constant drive to succeed and to become one of the best in the industry. I try to master every style of tattooing as possible, and not to become an artist known for any one particular style. The tattoo industry itself is a big inspiration, seeing how far tattooing has become — how real the images can look.

Q:What equipment and inks do you use?

A:I mostly use Mickey Sharps machines and occasionally a Martini. With machines, it’s whatever I feel comfortable using.  As far as inks go, I only use Starbrite for color. Occasionally some eternal inks. For black outlining ink, I use Kuro Sumi along with Kuro Sumi Greywash.

Q: How do you prepare for custom tattoos?

A: I make sure to sit down with the client. Ask a lot of questions. Show them different styles of tattooing that might fit their liking best. Once we figured out a theme and style together, I begin my research. I like my work to look as realistic as possible. I look up reference material on the internet or in books that I’ve collected over the years. Once I have what I need, I’ll either sketch it on paper or draw it on the person. I always make sure the design flows with the body part its going on. I think that’s one of the key points for a great tattoo.   PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Q: What needles do you prefer using?

A:Needles are essentially the tattoo artists’ paint brushes, and of course I want the best to work with. Mithra tattoo needles are what I prefer because of their consistency. In tight outlining needles, no other brand compares to them. I have tried a lot, but of course it is preference.

Q: Who are you biggest influences in the industry?

A:  Guy Aitchison www hyperspacestudios.com , Paul Booth www.darkimages.com , Robert Hernandez www.roberthernandeztattoos.com, Nikko Hurtado www.nikkohurtado.com , Bob Tyrell www.bobtyrell.com, Tom Renshaw www.tomrenshaw.com, and Goethe www.tattoosbygoethe.com. To me, realism is one the hardest styles to tattoo. All of these artists are masters at what they do and  capture realism so well, especially in the contrast, lighting, and texture.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

A:Hopefully being well known in the tattoo industry and being recognized for my talent. Also, continuing to run a successful business and to keep expanding and moving on to new endeavors.

Q: What do you think makes you stand out in the industry?

A: My dark complexion. [LOL] My beautiful dimples. [LOL] I think being down to earth, and obviously my art. I take my time and really focus on quality over quantity. I make my clients feel comfortable and see them as friends not dollar signs. Basically treating people how I would want to be treated.

Q: What’s the best thing about being a tattoo artist?

A: I get to do something I love. I get to interact with all kinds of people and meet new friends. I make people happier and help them feel better about themselves with art. I have the ability to create art and images that people are proud to take to the grave.

Q: Why did you choose to become a tattoo artist?

A: The truth? I just kind of fell into it. I don’t know how to explain it, but I always had an interest in the industry. I never thought it was going to be my career. I fell into it, got really good at it, and fell in love with it.
